Facial Fat Transfer

What is Facial Fat Transfer?

Facial fat transfer, also known as lipotransfer or complementary fat grafting, is a revolutionary advancement in aesthetic facial surgery. Traditional approaches for facial rejuvenation focused on surgical “lifting” procedures to tighten and reposition sagging tissues. Although effective, lifting alone neglects another important component of the aging process – facial volume loss. By strategically replacing volume where it has been lost, we can restore youthful facial contours and achieve lasting rejuvenation, effectively turning back the clock.

Fat transfer is particularly effective for restoring volume to the lower eyelids and cheeks, mouth and chin, and forehead and temples. With proper harvesting and meticulous delivery of fat cells, an experienced surgeon can restore and replenish a youthful appearance with a result that may last for years. In some cases, fat transfer may even become a permanent solution, making this a cost-effective, efficient alternative to injectable dermal fillers.

Choosing a Surgeon for Your Fat Transfer Procedure

When selecting a surgeon to perform your fat grafting procedure, it is important to choose someone with experience. Dr. Daines is skilled in performing fat transfer for cosmetic facial rejuvenation and will customize this procedure to help you achieve your specific cosmetic goals. In addition to facial rejuvenation, Dr. Daines can also transfer fat to the back of your hands as part of a comprehensive rejuvenation strategy to turn back the hands of time on this area as well.

Fat transfer can be done alone or in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures. Fat transfer enhances the results of a face and neck lift without adding to your recovery time. Dr. Daines also commonly performs fat transfer when he performs surgery to rejuvenate the lower eyelids.

Procedure Details

Depending on the number of areas to be treated, fat transfer usually takes 45-90 minutes and is done under twilight anesthesia to minimize discomfort. First, tiny incisions are made inconspicuously under the belly button or on the thighs. Fat is then harvested from the abdomen, thighs or buttocks via liposuction. Extracted fat is then processed to isolate pure, viable adipose cells. Those cells are precisely injected into areas where added volume will have a rejuvenating effect.

Because some fat cells will be reabsorbed by the body, Dr. Daines will inject slightly more than necessary to ensure the proper outcome. Post-procedural pain after fat transfer is usually minimal and can be managed with oral pain medication if necessary. Mild to moderate swelling and bruising are to be expected and will resolve within a matter of days. Exercise can be resumed a week after surgery. Final results are usually visible at one month.
